WASHINGTON, DC (May 10, 2011) Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA), Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI)  and 7 other members of Congress have called on the Food and Drug Administration to take immediate action to protect workers and consumers from serious health effects caused by use of formaldehyde-containing hair straighteners.  Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen.

Washington, D.C. (Monday, May 2, 2011) — Rep. Jan Schakowsky issued the following statement regarding the death of Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. Congresswoman Schakowsky is a Member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

 "Last night Americans finally heard the long-awaited and hoped for news delivered by President Obama himself:  Osama bin Laden is dead, killed as a result of a well-planned and brilliantly executed attack conducted by our intelligence community and the U.S. military....

Chicago, IL (Friday, April 22, 2011) - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky released the following statement commemorating Earth Day:

Today, as we recognize the 41st anniversary of Earth Day, we can't ignore the serious threat that climate change poses to our health, our safety and our planet. Scientists agree not just on the enormity of the threat but on the need to act now. The ten warmest years on record have all been since 1990, with 2010 the hottest ever. In recent years, hurricanes are more severe, water levels are rising, droughts are becoming longer, and mountain glaciers are receding around the world.

Washington, D.C. (April 15, 2011) - Today, the House of Representatives voted to pass the Republican budget for Fiscal Year 2012 by a vote of 235-193.  Representative Schakowsky against the budget proposal, which would gut essential government programs like Medicare while giving a huge tax break to the wealthiest Americans.  Rep. Schakowsky delivered the following statement on the floor of the House against the bill:

"Mr. Speaker, the other side is trying to claim the title of fiscal responsibility today.  It is a ridiculous assertion.
