WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) today joined Democratic leaders and advocates to oppose President Bush's proposed cuts in the housing budget. This year's proposed Housing and Urban Development (HUD) budget is cut by $2.28 billion.

COALITION REINTRODUCES BILL TO PROMOTE ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE HIV/AIDS DRUGS

DENOUNCE ACTIONS BY PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY IN SOUTH AFRICA

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) today joined her colleagues in reintroducing legislation to combat the worldwide HIV/AIDS crisis and promote access to affordable drugs. The Affordable HIV/AIDS Medicines for Poor Countries Act would prohibit the United States government from using trade policy and other measures to block the efforts of developing nations to fight HIV/AIDS. Representatives Maxine Waters (D-CA) is the chief sponsor of the legislation.

STATEMENT OF U.S. REPRESENTATIVE JAN SCHAKOWSKY IN RESPONSE TO PRESIDENT BUSH'S ADDRESS TO CONGRESS

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky tonight said that she opposes President Bush's tax cut geared to the rich and his call to privatize Social Security.

"I will not support a tax break for the rich until we make Social Security secure, give drug coverage to our seniors, and prepare our crumbling schools. The proposed tax cut risks our entire economy by betting the farm on crystal ball projections," Schakowsky said in response to President Bush's address to a joint session of Congress.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Representatives Henry Waxman (D-CA), Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Louise Slaughter (D-NY), and Martin Frost (D-TX) joined with 51 Members of Congress yesterday in letters urging President George W. Bush and Secretary of State Colin Powell to maintain a high-level commitment to the issue of Holocaust restitution.
