WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), released the following statement on her opposition to H.R. 7217:

“The extremist Republicans’ Israel Security Supplemental is another cynical political game that alienates our allies in Ukraine, denies urgently needed assistance to Palestinian civilians, and leaves out funding to protect our places of worship. I cannot, in good conscience, vote for this bill.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), Ranking Member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee Subcommittee on Innovation, Data, and Commerce, and U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett (TX-37), Ranking Member of the House Ways and Means Committee Subcommittee on Health, led lawmakers in a letter to United States Trade Ambassador Katherine Tai, urging her to support Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) waivers related to COVID-19 therapeutics and diagnostics at the World Trade Organization (WTO).

WASHINGTON— Today, U.S. Representatives Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), Raúl M. Grijalva (AZ-07), and Elissa Slotkin (MI-07) reintroduced the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Restoration Act. The bill modernizes and improves SSI by streamlining the claiming process, increasing asset limits, setting the minimum benefit at 100 percent of the Federal Poverty Level, and eliminating punitive reductions in benefits.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Representatives Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), Co-Founder and Co-Chair of the House Democratic Caucus Task Force on Aging and Families, and Linda T. Sánchez (CA-38) reintroduced the Fairness in Nursing Home Arbitration Act to protect elderly Americans in nursing homes. This legislation would prohibit long-term care facilities from requiring or soliciting residents to enter into pre-dispute, mandatory, binding arbitration agreements.

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), a Chief Deputy Whip and Ranking Member of the House Innovation, Data, and Commerce Subcommittee, introduced the Restrictions on Utilizing Realistic Electronic Artificial Language (R U REAL) Act. This bill requires disclosure of the use of AI to emulate human interaction in telemarketing over text or phone and would double penalties for any robocall violations of the Telemarketing Sales Rule (TSR) when using AI to impersonate someone.

On this day, let us all come together to honor the lives and memories of the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and the millions of other victims of Nazi persecution. Further, we must never forget the survivors whose lives were forever changed.

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky, Ranking Member of the House Innovation, Data, and Commerce Subcommittee, and Senator Peter Welch (D-VT) introduced the Consumer Advocacy and Protection (CAP) Act, legislation to enhance consumer protection and ensure the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) can hold companies accountable for consumer safety violations. The CAP Act aims to deter companies from committing safety violations by increasing CPSC’s penalty authority.
