WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court decision in King v. Burwell:
“Once again, the Supreme Court has rejected a partisan attempt to undermine the health protections provided by the Affordable Care Act, which I like to call Obamacare. As a result of today’s decision in King v. Burwell, 19,000 people in my district, 232,000 people in Illinois and 6.4 million Americans in 34 states across the country can go to bed tonight knowing that they will wake up tomorrow insured and able to take care of their family’s medical needs.
CHICAGO – Today the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have jointly proposed new standards for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles. Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on the new standards:
"I applaud the proposed fuel efficiency standards for trucks issued today by the EPA and NHTSA. These standards are both significant and attainable. Washington, DC – "I'm horrified, saddened and angered by the church shooting in Charleston, SC that took the lives of nine people. My thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of all the victims of this terrible shooting. This is a time for solidarity and mourning.
The gunman has been arrested, but that is only the first step toward justice. I am pleased to see Attorney General Loretta Lynch swiftly leading the federal investigation into this awful incident – another very important step.

Washington, DC – Rep. Jan Schakowsky issued the following statement after the House of Representatives passed a stand-alone Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) bill:
“I am disappointed that the House of Representatives passed a stand-alone ‘Fast Track’ bill this afternoon. If the Senate passes a similar stand-alone measure, TPA will be used to rush through the highly-flawed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement.
Today, Pope Francis released the Papal Encyclical, calling on all of us to address the global crisis of climate change. But the Encyclical was not the only religious document this week calling for bold action. The Rabbinic Letter demonstrates that leaders in the Jewish faith share the commitment to meeting perhaps the greatest challenge of our time.

Washington, DC– Rep. Jan Schakowsky issued the following statement after the Senate trade agreement package failed to pass the House of Representatives:
“Today the House voted to derail ‘fast track’ authority that would not only be used to push through a highly-flawed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement but that would prevent Congress from amending trade pacts for the next six years.
WASHINGTON, DC – Today Rep. Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), Sen. Dick Durbin (IL) and Sen. Sherrod Brown (OH) introduced the Patriot Employer Tax Credit Act, a bill that would provide a tax credit to companies that provide fair wages and good benefits to workers while closing a tax loophole that incentivizes corporations to send jobs overseas. The loophole costs the U.S. Treasury approximately $50 billion each year at a time when outsourced jobs and stagnant wages force more American families to turn to safety net programs to make ends meet.
WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement after news broke that 41 individuals in Bangladesh had been charged criminally for their role in the April 2013 Rana Plaza collapse:
“Justice has been a long time coming, but I am pleased to see criminal charges filed against many of those who bear some responsibility for this tragedy, including the owner of the Rana Plaza building, a number of factory owners and government officials. Their prosecution is a step in the right direction. I urge the Bangladeshi government to ensure that those affected by this horrific tragedy are made whole and to take necessary steps to protect workers throughout the country.
