Washington, DC -- “The President’s focus on the middle class and his proposals to address income inequality resonated with me and, according to immediate focus groups and polling, with the American people as well.
He set the tone from the start asking: “Will we accept an economy where only a few of us do spectacularly well? Or will we commit ourselves to an economy that generates rising incomes and chances for everyone who makes the effort?”
The Republicans sat, as if superglued to their seats, as the President gave one example after another of the dramatic improvements in the economy. He went off script to remind them, “This is good news, people.”
WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement addressing the fifth anniversary of the Supreme Court's decision in Citizens United v. FEC:
“Five years ago, the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United set the stage for increased amounts of corporate and special interest money to be spent influencing our elections. Elections are now dominated by large donors and Super PACs, instead of American citizens. Bottom line, the highest court in the land decided that money is speech and corporations are people.

CHICAGO, IL - On January 14, U.S. District Court Judge Richard Leon issued the second of two opinions overturning much of a U.S. Department of Labor’s rule to provide minimum wage and overtime protections to 2 million home care workers. Rep. Schakowsky issued the following statement:

“The question on everyone’s mind at this very moment is: Are we doing everything we can to prevent a Paris-like terrorist attack here in the United States?
Americans would be right to expect the Republican majority to promptly, finally and adequately fund the Department of Homeland Security after they already delayed funding once by making it a political football on immigration.
WASHINGTON, DC – “Five years ago today, Haiti was devastated by an earthquake that killed more than 100,000 people and destroyed most of its critical infrastructure. It was a calamity of Biblical proportions. I traveled to Haiti shortly after the earthquake and got a glimpse of the devastation.
In response, the United States and a broad international coalition joined together to help the country rebuild and recover. Five years later, challenges remain. The Haitian government still struggles with instability, housing remains inadequate for many families and the economy continues to lag behind – leaving many Haitians struggling to make a living.
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Rep. Jan Schakowsky, introduced the Public Option Deficit Reduction Act. This bill would create a publicly run health insurance plan that would be available in every Obamacare marketplace, an option that would save $158 billion over 10 years, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.
