WASHINGTON, DC (January 8, 2011) — Rep. Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), issued the following statement on the shooting in Arizona involving Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (AZ-08 ), members of her staff, and some of her constituents.


"I am horrified at the news that several people, including my colleague Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, were shot today in Tucson, Arizona, some of them fatally. My heart goes out to the families, friends and colleagues of the individuals who were injured or killed in this terrible act of violence. I hold them all in my thoughts and prayers.

Schakowsky, along with other Democrats, offered a number of amendments to protect popular consumer protections and to highlight the critical imprortance of the Affordable Care Act. The Republicans rejected all Democratic amendments.

WASHINGTON, DC (December 15, 2010) —Today Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) participated in a ceremony in the Oval Office where President Barack Obama signed the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation (CALM) Act into law.  The legislation passed by voice vote in the House and also in the Senate, an indication of broad support.


Schakowsky co-sponsored the CALM Act, which remedies a decades-old complaint: that the volume on television commercials is often many times louder than that of television programming.

More than 30 infant deaths since 2001; millions of recalls in recent years


WASHINGTON, DC (December 15, 2010) —Today U.S. Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Chairman Inez Tenenbaum, Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), and Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-NY), and a parent whose child died from a faulty crib announced that the Consumer Product Safety Commission has approved new federal rules to prohibit traditional drop-side cribs.
