VA judge issues outlier ruling: individual responsibility mandate unconstitutional

WASHINGTON, DC (December 13, 2010) — Today Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), issued the following statement in response to the ruling by Virginia's U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson that the individual responsibility mandate in health The Affordable Care Act is unconstitutional.

WASHINGTON, DC (December 9, 2010) — Today Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), a member the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, sent a letter to the U.S. Senate Republican leadership urging swift passage of the New START Treaty. Sixty-eight House members have added their names to this letter.

"The New START treaty has been awaiting Senate consideration for eight months and has been the subject of 21 hearings, yet the Senate Republican leadership continues to stonewall its ratification.

"This is a momentous day in Illinois and I commend the state House and Senate for taking a historic vote to pass civil unions legislation. With it, Illinois removes some of the most egregious barriers currently faced by gays and lesbians in our state, including the denial of hospital visiting rights to same-sex partners. This is a necessary and very important beginning.

Insurers that spend less will be required to issue rebates to consumers.
