VA judge issues outlier ruling: individual responsibility mandate unconstitutional

WASHINGTON, DC (December 9, 2010) — Today Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), a member the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, sent a letter to the U.S. Senate Republican leadership urging swift passage of the New START Treaty. Sixty-eight House members have added their names to this letter.

"The New START treaty has been awaiting Senate consideration for eight months and has been the subject of 21 hearings, yet the Senate Republican leadership continues to stonewall its ratification.

Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) released the following statement today in response to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's proposal to expand the rear visibility standard in vehicles.  The rulemaking was required by the Cameron Gulbransen Kids Transportation Safety Act, which was sponsored by Rep. Schakowsky and became law in February 2008.

"This is a momentous day in Illinois and I commend the state House and Senate for taking a historic vote to pass civil unions legislation. With it, Illinois removes some of the most egregious barriers currently faced by gays and lesbians in our state, including the denial of hospital visiting rights to same-sex partners. This is a necessary and very important beginning.

"Medical loss ratio... set to protect Americans' health care and pocketbooks


CHICAGO, IL — (November 22, 2010) Today Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) released the following statement in response to the Department of Health and Human Services' implementation of the "medical loss ratio,... which requires insurers to spend at least 80 cents of every premium dollar on medical care. Insurers that spend less will be required to issue rebates to consumers.
