YOU DESERTED OUR TROOPS
ON THE BATTLEFIELD
CHICAGO, IL - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Chief Deputy Whip, today said that Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has deserted American men and women serving in Iraq for failing to ensure that they have enough lifesaving equipment. Schakowsky reacted to Rumsfeld's comments where he dismissed the concerns of soldiers who are forced "to dig through local landfills for pieces of scrap metal and compromised ballistic glass to uparmor" their vehicles.

SCHAKOWSKY MARKS 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE TRAGEDY IN BHOPAL, INDIA
CHICAGO, IL - Today marks the 20th anniversary of the Bhopal, India, disaster, when 27 tons of poisonous gas leaked from a storage tank at the Union Carbide Corp.'s pesticide plant. More than 7,000 Indians died in the immediate months after accident. The deadly effects continue today.

SCHAKOWSKY JOINS IL PIRG IN RELEASING 2004 TROUBLE IN TOYLAND REPORT
CHICAGO, IL - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), the top Democrat on the Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection subcommittee, today joined Illinois Public Interest Research Group (IL PIRG) in releasing the 2004 "Trouble in Toyland" report. Schakowsky is a leading Congressional force behind strengthening current product safety regulations and has spearheaded legislation to impose stricter federal protections and mandatory testing of children's durable products.

SCHAKOWSKY PRESENTS WWII VETERAN AND SKOKIE RESIDENT MELVIN MUEHLEMAN WITH LOST MEDALS
CHICAGO, IL - During a ceremony in her Chicago office, U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) today presented Melvin Muehleman with his medals and citations, almost sixty-years after he served in World War II. Muehleman, a U.S. army Staff Sergeant, served in the Asian-Pacific Theater during World War II from Oct 4, 1941 until October 11, 1945. Sergeant Muehleman fought in New Guinea and Southern Philippines and was wounded in action at Luzon on February 25, 1945.

"When Colin Powell joined the Administration, he was a respected General and a shining star in the eyes of the world and the American people. Now, he is leaving after presiding over President Bush's failed foreign policy that has led the US to become more isolated diplomatically than at any other time in modern history. Tragically, Powell's legacy is directly tied to President Bush's quagmire in Iraq.
