WASHINGTON, D.C - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) today called on Attorney General Janet Reno to reunite Elian Gonzalez with his father in Cuba. Schakowsky also said that she opposes any Congressional action that would force the young boy to remain in the United States.

RELEASE REPORT ON CHICAGO AREA NURSING HOME ABUSES

CHICAGO, IL - At a news conference to release a report on Chicago area nursing homes abuses, U.S. Representatives Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Bobby Rush (D-IL), and Rod Blagojevich (D-IL) today announced plans to introduce legislation to strengthen federal nursing home standards. A daughter, whose mother suffered from severe bedsores while at a nursing home and who died last month, also participated at today's event.

SCHAKOWSKY AND MEMBERS OF CONGRESS URGE UKRAINIAN GOVERNMENT TO USE OPPORTUNITY TO HOLD NAZI WAR CRIMINAL ACCOUNTABLE

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) today urged the government of Ukraine to "take in" Bohdan Koziy, a Nazi war criminal who has been ordered to leave of Costa Rica after living in that country for 15 years.

In a letter to Ukrainian President H.E. Leonid Kuchma, Schakowsky and more than 20 of her colleagues urged the President to take in Koziy, who is a Ukrainian native, and to consider this opportunity to hold him accountable for his crimes.

SCHAKOWSKY -- "WORLD BANK AIDS MARSHALL PLAN IS SMALL DROP IN A VERY BIG BUCKET"

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Continuing her efforts to make affordable HIV/AIDS drugs available worldwide, U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) said today that the passage of the World Bank AIDS Marshall Plan is a "small drop in a very big bucket."

The bill, approved by the House Banking Committee, would create a worldwide trust fund that is administered by the World Bank and funded by governments, the private sector, and international organizations. Nations would be eligible to receive grants to address the HIV/AIDS crisis.
