Schakowsky Slams Trump for Budget of Broken Promises

Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC –  Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, Senior Chief Deputy Whip and Chair of the Energy and Commerce Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee, released a statement on President Trump’s Fiscal Year (2021) budget proposal and the devastating impacts it would have on Older Americans and families across the United States:

“For the fourth straight year, President Trump has broken his promises to the American people and slashed trillions from the programs that make American great: Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. When he ran for President, Donald Trump made a promise that people paid attention to: ‘I’m not going to cut Social Security like every other Republican and I’m not going to cut Medicare or Medicaid.’ Just hours ago he promised not to touch Medicare and Social Security. Yet from his first budget proposal for Fiscal Year 2018 to this year’s Fiscal Year 2021 proposal, President Trump has done the exact opposite by gutting benefits and protections for seniors, individuals with disabilities, and their families. Cutting $500 billion from Medicare, nearly $1 trillion from Medicaid, and $24 billion from Social Security would cripple these lifeline programs and endanger the hundreds of millions of people who rely on them. Notably, these cuts are almost equal to the $2 trillion in tax breaks that President Trump gifted to the top 1 percent through the GOP Tax Scam. This budget reflects the policy priorities of the President of the United States and they are immoral. This is a budget for Trump’s cronies and club members rather than for the families he is sworn to protect.

“As a direct result of the GOP Tax scam, President Trump’s signature legislative achievement, the biggest banks on Wall Street got a $32 billion gift last year, one they certainly didn’t need but undoubtedly asked for anyways. The President’s budget doubles down on this failed policy by permanently extending the GOP tax scam. Candidate Trump promised to hold Wall Street accountable by repealing the carried interest deduction, a Wall Street loophole he once described as ‘getting away with murder.’ And yet his today’s budget proposal once again fails to repeal the Wall Street loophole he campaigned on repealing.

“Furthermore, Trump’s budget request yet again seeks billions of dollars for immigration enforcement, nuclear weapons, and a wasteful and ineffective border wall, to the detriment of American families’ healthcare, education, and safety.  He is once again putting his personal interests over our nation’s. After running up the deficit by giving massive tax cuts to himself, millionaires, billionaires, and large corporations, he is asking working and middle-class families to pick up the tab while cutting the services they rely on most.  His un-American budget seeks to cut $535 million in funding for states and localities to prevent terrorism and address natural disasters. He also wants to totally cut TSA Law Enforcement Grants, putting our travelers, airports, and national security at risk. Instead, he wants $2 billion on top of the billions of dollars he’s stolen from accounts that fund our military families’ housing and childcare, to pay for his cruel pet project at our Southern border.

“President Trump likes to talk about how America has the cleanest air and most pristine water, but each year he has proposed massive cuts to the agency charged with protecting air and water—the EPA. This year’s 27% EPA budget cut would devastate an already crippled agency at a time when we face a growing climate crisis. Instead of helping the EPA lead the way in finding solutions to climate change and protect Americans’ health, President Trump wants to roll back vital environmental protections and slash the EPA’s budget. The climate crisis is leading to dangerous storms, worsening air quality, and threatening drinking water infrastructure. Once again, the anti-science Trump administration shows us it cares more about promoting big polluters than ensuring clean drinking water in our homes and schools.

“I will fight against this destructive budget proposal to ensure it is the last one President Trump will ever offer.”
