WASHINGTON, DC – “President Obama’s budget is a clear blueprint for how we can move our country forward and build an America that works for all of us rather than just the richest few.

It reflects our values and it invests in our future by creating jobs, raising wages, investing in child and dependent care, education, infrastructure, research and development, retirement security, and other priorities. This budget would strengthen our country and promote economic security for those who are struggling to make ends meet.

WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement in recognition of International Holocaust Remembrance Day:

“I join today in recognizing International Holocaust Remembrance Day – the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, where more than a million innocent people were brutally murdered. It is a day when the international community honors the memories of all those lost to the terrible atrocities of the Holocaust. We recognize the survivors whose lives were unalterably changed, many of whom came to the 9th Congressional district of Illinois.

WASHINGTON, DC – “House Republicans planned to vote on the ‘Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act,’ this week, which proposed a 20-week abortion ban. However, Republican women and their supporters strongly opposed it, so it was not called for a vote. I believe that was a great moment, but sadly we were not able to build on it.

Washington, DC -- “The President’s focus on the middle class and his proposals to address income inequality resonated with me and, according to immediate focus groups and polling, with the American people as well.

He set the tone from the start asking: “Will we accept an economy where only a few of us do spectacularly well? Or will we commit ourselves to an economy that generates rising incomes and chances for everyone who makes the effort?”

The Republicans sat, as if superglued to their seats, as the President gave one example after another of the dramatic improvements in the economy. He went off script to remind them, “This is good news, people.”

WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement addressing the fifth anniversary of the Supreme Court's decision in Citizens United v. FEC:

“Five years ago, the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United set the stage for increased amounts of corporate and special interest money to be spent influencing our elections. Elections are now dominated by large donors and Super PACs, instead of American citizens. Bottom line, the highest court in the land decided that money is speech and corporations are people.

WASHINGTON, DC – “I look forward President Obama’s State of the Union Address tonight. The President has already laid out bold plans to move our country forward – to raise wages for American workers and to provide financial and retirement security for all American families. I am eager to begin work on enacting those policies so that we can expand the middle-class, end poverty and energize our economy.

Washington, D.C. – Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) released the following statement in opposition to H.R. 240, the so-called Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act, which House Republicans passed today:

“The question on everyone’s mind at this very moment is: Are we doing everything we can to prevent a Paris-like terrorist attack here in the United States?

Americans would be right to expect the Republican majority to promptly, finally and adequately fund the Department of Homeland Security after they already delayed funding once by making it a political football on immigration.
