Press Releases
WASHINGTON, DC – Yesterday, President Barack Obama vetoed S. 1, the Keystone XL Pipeline Approval Act. Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement in response:
“I strongly support the President’s decision to veto the Keystone XL approval bill. The President has the authority to make the ultimate decision on Keystone XL, and I am confident that when all the facts are considered, he will reject it outright. In the meantime, Congress has no authority to force the pipeline's approval, and it's time for Republicans pull their heads out of the tar sands.
WASHINGTON, DC – “After much thought, I have made the decision not to attend Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s March 3 scheduled address before a joint session of Congress, while still hoping it will either be postponed to a more appropriate date or delivered in a closed session.
As a Jew, support for Israel is in my DNA. Throughout my nine terms in the U.S. House, I have advocated that Congress and the Administration stand with Israel in a bi-partisan way to protect Israel’s security and very right to exist. I strongly agree with both the Prime Minister of Israel and the President of the United States that Iran can never be allowed to possess a nuclear weapon.
CHICAGO – Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner presented his budget proposal on Wednesday. Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement in response:
“Governor Rauner’s budget is an assault on our state’s middle class and those striving to get into it. He proposes balancing the budget on the backs of those with disabilities, college students struggling to get through school, commuters trying to get to work, those relying on Medicaid for health services, and public employees who help make our state run. It does this without a single tax increase for millionaires, like Governor Rauner and his friends.
CHICAGO – Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky issued the following statement in response to the decision of a U.S. District Judge in the case of the State of Texas v. United States of America:
CHICAGO -- "I join in grieving for those who were killed in Copenhagen because of their views and because of their religion. Once again, a synagogue has been targeted. As a Jew, a mother and a grandmother, my heart goes out to the family of the Jewish security guard as well as the friends and family of the girl marking her Bat Mitzvah, a ritual that should have been one of joy instead of horror. These acts of terrorism and anti-Semitism are indefensible. We must come together to prevent any more of these tragic events so that children and adults can practice their faith in peace, without fear anywhere in the world."

WASHINGTON, DC – This week, Anthem, the second-largest health insurance company in the United States, announced that up to 80 million customer records have been hacked. Rep. Jan Schakowsky issued the following statement in response:
WASHINGTON, DC – “Recent outbreaks of measles, which was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000, are extremely concerning. As a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, I hope that we will have a hearing, as has been formally requested by Ranking Members Frank Pallone Jr., Gene Green, and Diana DeGette on the outbreak and the importance of vaccinations to prevent the spread of measles. I hope the request is granted promptly, and I look forward to fully participating in the hearing.
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone Jr., Commerce Manufacturing & Trade Subcommittee Ranking Member Jan Schakowsky, and Oversight & Investigations Subcommittee Ranking Member Diana DeGette sent a letter to Chairmen Fred Upton, Michael Burgess, and Tim Murphy requesting hearings on the rise in subprime auto loans to low-income consumers.
