Washington, D.C. – The White House held a Summit today to address the challenges that women and families face in workplaces, the majority of which have not adapted to meet today’s needs. Rep. Jan Schakowsky issued the following statement on the Summit:
“I found the White House Summit on Working Families to be an important vehicle to focus attention and identify solutions to the problems that working families face. Many of the policies discussed at today’s Summit match the economic agenda of the Democratic Women’s Working Group, ‘When Women Succeed, America Succeeds’. In fact, when President Barack Obama said those words at the Summit the crowd stood and cheered.

WASHINGTON — U.S. Representatives Mike Quigley (IL-05), Tammy Duckworth (IL-08) and Jan Schakowsky (IL-09) are urging the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to conduct new public hearings and issue a new environmental impact study (EIS) of the O’Hare Modernization Program in response to increased noise pollution and questions raised over the hearings process.

Jan Schakowsky, a member of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus, released the following statement in response to the President Barack Obama’s announcement that he will sign an executive order banning federal contractors from workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity:
“I am grateful to President Obama for doing the right thing and pledging to sign this executive order. As a result of his action, more than ten million Americans will have reassurance that they will not face harassment, denial of a raise, or even termination just because of their sexual orientation.

Chicago, IL – Today, General Motors announced the results of their internal report. Rep. Jan Schakowsky issued the following statement in response to the announcement:
The internal report released today on the General Motors ignition switch defect is very troubling. It shows that the company, through a series of failures lasting more than ten years, repeatedly neglected to put the safety of its customers first. At least 13 people – and perhaps many more – died because GM did not adequately value safety.
Chicago, IL – Today, the Environmental Protection Agency announced a new proposed rule that would require significant emissions reductions from existing power plants. Rep. Jan Schakowsky issued the following statement in response to the announcement:
Chicago, IL – Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement to mark the official beginning of marriage equality in Illinois. The Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act, signed into law by Governor Pat Quinn last year, allows same-sex couples to marry in the state as of June 1.
“Effective today, marriage equality is the law of the land in Illinois. This is a great day for couples all over our state, and I'm so happy for all of those who will be able to marry as a result. Today and going forward every committed couple in Illinois can enjoy the protections and benefits they deserve.
Washington, DC – Today, Rep. Jan Schakowsky led more than 100 Members of Congress on a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry urging action on human rights in Honduras. The letter expresses concerns about the situation within the country and urges the State Department to take an active role in ensuring that human rights are protected in the country. Almost five years after the 2009 coup, human rights violations continue to occur in the country. Vulnerable groups, including members of the LGBT community, labor organizers, indigenous and campesino activists and others continue to face threats of violence or worse.
