Washington, D.C. – Rep. Paul Ryan, Chairman of the House Budget Committee and author of the draconian Republican budget, today offered his ideas for dealing with poverty in America.
Even before examining his new "anti-poverty" agenda, it's worth remembering the Ryan Budget which passed the House last April; that budget would cut SNAP (formerly called Food Stamps) by $137 billion, cut 300,000 students from the school lunch program, cut $732 billion from Medicaid, and drastically reduce federal spending on areas like medical research, education, and housing assistance.

Today, Rep. Jan Schakowsky sent a letter to Walgreens CEO Gregory Wasson expressing her opposition to the Illinois company’s rumored consideration of a plan to relocate its headquarters to Switzerland in order to avoid U.S. taxes. The move, called inversion, allows Walgreens to avoid U.S. taxation by purchasing a smaller European firm and relocating its headquarters on paper, while maintaining the majority of its business operations in the United States. Doing so would allow the company to dodge an estimated $4 billion in taxes over the next five years.

WASHINGTON, DC — On June 20, Representatives Jan Schakowsky and Raul Grijalva led 121 of their House colleagues on a letter to Social Security Acting Administrator Carolyn W. Colvin, urging her to reverse a decision to limit access to important services at local SSA offices. Those services included in-person requests for benefit verification statements and copies of Social Security numbers (known as Numi-lites).

Jan Schakowsky offered an amendment to the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations bill on Tuesday that would prohibit federal funds from being used to contract with companies that have violated the Fair Labor Standards Act. The amendment passed by voice vote. Rep. Schakowsky issued the following statement following the vote:

In that ruling the Court determined that closely-held, for-profit corporations can deny their women employees access to contraceptives based on the corporation’s religious objections.
