Washington, DC (November 12, 2013) – Rep. Jan Schakowsky statement on the passage of the PREEMIE Reauthorization Act:

“The PREEMIE Reauthorization Act allows for enhanced research and education services to reduce premature births, a leading cause death in newborns.

“I applaud my colleagues in the Senate and House for bringing this important bill to a vote, in order to continue federal support for efforts that prevent premature births in our country. This is also a reminder of the importance of Obamacare’s maternity coverage requirement. That requirement will help women receive important prenatal care which leads to healthier babies.”

“The final rules that were issued today for the Mental Health Parity and Equity Addiction Act are a major step forward for healthcare consumers. This Act ensures that consumers won’t face higher co-pays or premiums and visit limits are no more restrictive for mental health disorders than they are for other medical benefits. Because of Obamacare, these new consumer protections will apply in the individual and small group markets, making sure that everyone benefits from mental health parity standards.

Chicago, IL (November 5, 2013) – Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) released the following statement after the Illinois General Assembly passed SB 10, the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act, which legalizes marriage equality:

“I am ecstatic that the Illinois General Assembly has followed the Illinois State Senate and passed SB 10, the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act this afternoon. Washington, DC (October 25, 2013) – Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on the FDA's recommendation to reclassify hydrocodone combination drugs:

"I am pleased that the Food and Drug Administration is recommending that opioids, hydrocodone combination drug products , be held to higher safety standards in order to cut down on abuse and save lives. The number of deaths and health problems caused by the misuse of prescription opioid drugs demands we take decisive action to end this epidemic, and I urge the Drug Enforcement Administration to act on the FDA's recommendation as soon as possible.
