Washington, DC (September 20, 2013) — Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on the shooting that happened in Chicago:

"Last night, innocent men, women and children were shot at Back of the Yards in Chicago. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and the community. The shooting left 13 injured, including a 3 year-old boy who is in critical condition at a hospital.

Washington, DC — Legislation introduced in both the U.S. Senate and U.S. House today would provide consumers with increased freedom in their banking decisions and protect consumers against unfair fees and bank practices that can create obstacles to switching banks. The legislation was offered by Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) and Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA).

Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), Mike Quigley (IL-05), Bill Foster (IL-11), Brad Schneider (IL-10), Cheri Bustos (IL-17) and Robin Kelly (IL-02) released the following county-by-county numbers of people who would immediately lose all of their unemployment insurance:

On December 28th almost 82,000 people in Illinois are set to lose their unemployment insurance coverage because House Republicans blocked an effort to extend the federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation program into 2014. An additional 89,000 people in Illinois will lose their coverage in the first six months of 2014 if Republicans continue to block an extension of the program.

"I strongly believe a diplomatic solution is the best way to end Syrian use of chemical weapons. The Russian proposal, first suggested by the Obama Administration, should be fully explored. The U.S. threat of military action is the only reason Syria is even considering this solution.
