Washington, DC (February 12, 2013) — Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on President Obama's State of the Union address:
"Tonight, the President spoke to the American people and focused on creating good jobs, strengthening our economy, reducing gun violence, passing comprehensive immigration reform and investing in the future of the middle class.
"Middle class families are the engine of our economic recovery, yet they've spent too much time without enough gas in the tank. It's time we rev up our economic policy and drive our middle class toward prosperity. We must make America a magnet for jobs and manufacturing by investing in clean energy and education.
Washington, DC (February 8, 2013) — Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement Carolyn Murray attending the State of the Union Address:
Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky announced today that Evanston resident Carolyn Murray will be her guest for the State of the Union Address. On November 29, 2012 Ms. Murray's son Justin was fatally shot in Evanston. As a prior Naval Reservist and longtime community activist, Ms. Murray began organizing a gun buyback program in the summer of 2012. She even organized an event held on December 15, less than three weeks after Justin's death, where nearly 50 guns were collected.

A suburban mother who lost her son to gun violence less than three months ago will be Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky's guest at Tuesday's State of the Union address.
Carolyn Murray of Evanston, whose 19-year-old son Justin was shot in front of his grandmother's Evanston home Nov. 29, has long been a proponent of gun control, participating in area gun buyback programs and candlelight vigils years before Justin's death.

"I'm pleased that we have momentum building towards comprehensive immigration reform. President Obama and the bipartisan group of eight Senators have given immigrants hope that their families can stay together in the United States. By calling for a pathway to citizenship, both the President and the Senators have offered a chance for the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States to come out of the shadows and be productive members of their communities.

"The Congressional Progressive Caucus remains strongly opposed to any cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. Using the chained CPI to reduce Social Security cost of living adjustments is a cut that middle class families cannot afford.
"The CPC and I will do everything in our power to oppose these cuts. The American people have been clear - they want us to defend and strengthen Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. We pledge to stand by the American people and to always protect the interests of middle class families."
