Washington, DC (December 14, 2012) — Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement today in response to the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut:
"It is a sad day for America when the most innocent among us become victims of a sickening, senseless act of extreme violence in Newtown, Connecticut. My deep condolences are extended not only to those who lost a child or a loved one today, but for the children who lived through such a terrifying experience.
Washington, DC (December 13, 2012) — Today Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) and 65 members of the House Democratic caucus sent a letter to the President and House and Senate leadership asking them to include provisions that will boost the economy and create jobs in any legislation to avert tax increases and spending cuts at the end of the year.
Yesterday, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said a return to broad-based prosperity will require sustained improvement in the job market, which in turn requires stronger economic growth.

"Social Security has not contributed a dime to our budget deficit. By law, Social Security cannot borrow money or run a deficit. Nor is Social Security in crisis. With a current $2.7 trillion reserve, it is in no danger any time soon of running out of funds to pay benefits.

It's true that the details are becoming clearer now about tax policies, such as whether changes will affect income over $250,000 or $1 million. But that precision is mostly missing when it comes to proposals regarding Medicare and Medicaid.
