WASHINGTON, DC (September 12, 2012) — Today, Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) released an analysis of the deficit reduction plan proposed by National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform co-Chairs Erskine Bowles and Alan Simpson. "Bowles-Simpson: Less Than Meets the Eye... dispels the notion that the so-called "Bowles-Simpson... proposal is a balanced approach to reduce the deficit. Instead, this analysis is an easy-to-digest resource that spells out how the "Bowles-Simpson... proposal places too much of the deficit reduction burden on seniors, the middle class, and low-income families.

Washington, D.C. (September 12, 2012) — Today, Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement condemning the rocket attack in Beghazi, Libya that killed four American personnel, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens:

"I am horrified by the vicious attack against the U.S. diplomatic post in Beghazi, Libya that took the lives of Ambassador Christopher Stevens, Foreign Service Information Management Officer Sean Smith, and two other innocent Americans. My prayers go out to their families and embassy personnel.

Bobby Rush (D-IL) sent a letter to Lisa Jackson, Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), urging the adoption of a strong soot pollution standard to protect public health and the environment.

I have lived near Lake Michigan my whole life, and I am pleased that our most treasured body of fresh water can rely on the enhanced stewardship of both countries.

CHICAGO, IL — Today, U.S. Representatives Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), Mike Quigley (IL-05) and Senator Dick Durbin (IL) held a congressional field forum to explore the impact of the growing student loan debt on families and the economy.

The forum was hosted in the Chicago City Council chambers, where the Illinois lawmakers heard testimony from a diverse panel of higher education experts, consumer protection advocates, and students affected by escalating debt. Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan also provided perspective on for-profit colleges and the debt issues some of those schools have created for students.

"Today we celebrate one our nation's greatest success stories. Since President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Social Security into law 77 years ago, Social Security has never missed a payment nor added a penny to the nation's debt through 13 economic recessions. Over 55 million Americans count on Social Security for vital financial protection. In one out of every four households, someone is receiving Social Security benefits — a retiree, a disabled worker, a child or a widowed spouse.
