WASHINGTON, D.C. (October 18, 2012) — Today, Rep. Schakowsky (D-Ill.) released the following statement after the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional.
"I applaud the decision made by the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals today, which ruled that DOMA is unconstitutional. The court confirmed what I and many others have long argued: all Americans deserve equal treatment under the law, and DOMA prevents that from happening. I have always been a supporter of marriage equality, and I am pleased that the court held that same-sex couples deserve constitutional protection.
The House Republican Budget would make a number of significant changes to Medicare, Medicaid, and numerous other programs that benefit seniors. Their budget principles are simple: Make seniors pay much more for much less while enriching private insurers and drug companies; and put greater financial burdens on seniors.
A report drafted by Rep. Henry Waxman, Ranking Member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee assesses the impact of the Ryan budget on seniors in every Congressional district. The report contains data demonstrating the many ways in which the Ryan budget threatens the critical programs that seniors depend on.
More than 56 million Social Security recipients will see monthly payments go up by 1.7 percent

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded Evanston nonprofit Youth Organizations Umbrella a $500,000 grant that will fund a street outreach program in the city.
YOU Executive Director Seth Greenannounced the news with Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) at a community anti-violence rally Monday night. The department will award $166,500 to YOU annually in the next three years to fund youth outreach programs, especially those targeting the 18-26 age group, Schakowsky told The Daily on Wednesday.

Recent efforts to suppress voter participation are designed to silence the voice of American voters — especially seniors, people of color, the poor, and young adults.
In Florida, new restrictions on voter registration led the League of Women Voters to suspend their efforts until the law was halted by the Court.
