Washington, D.C. (Saturday, May 28, 2011) — Rep. Jan Schakowsky issued the following statement in response to President Obama's letter concerning Poland and the Visa Waiver Program:Â
 "I want to applaud President Obama for his strong commitment to improving ties with our ally Poland and including Poland in the Visa Waiver Program.Â
WASHINGTON, DC (May 24, 2011) — Today Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL, member of President Obama's 18-member Fiscal Commission, offered an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012 to discourage wasteful spending and fraud. The amendment would require the Pentagon to pass an independent audit of defense spending by the year 2017. If accepted by the Rules Committee, the full House could vote on the amendment during consideration of the Defense Authorization bill.

CHICAGO, IL (May 13, 2011) — Today Rep. Jan Schakowsky (IL-9) announced the Illinois 9th district's winners of the 2011 "An Artistic Discovery Congressional Art Competition.... Conducted in Congressional districts throughout the country, the competition has had hundreds of thousands of participants since its inception in 1984.
Competitive grant program would fund college counseling center outreach and student treatment
 WASHINGTON, DC (May 11, 2011) — Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) today introduced legislation to address growing mental health needs on college campuses. The Mental Health on Campus Improvement Act, H.R. 1833would establish grants to provide funding to colleges seeking to focus on outreach to identify students who may be contemplating suicide or have other mental health needs. The bill also assists colleges to provide treatment to students who come to counseling centers for help.Â
WASHINGTON, DC (May 10, 2011) —Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA), Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI)  and 7 other members of Congress have called on the Food and Drug Administration to take immediate action to protect workers and consumers from serious health effects caused by use of formaldehyde-containing hair straighteners. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen. Today, as we recognize the 41st anniversary of Earth Day, we can't ignore the serious threat that climate change poses to our health, our safety and our planet. Scientists agree not just on the enormity of the threat but on the need to act now. The ten warmest years on record have all been since 1990, with 2010 the hottest ever. In recent years, hurricanes are more severe, water levels are rising, droughts are becoming longer, and mountain glaciers are receding around the world.
