WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Members of the House Democratic Caucus Seniors Task Force, led by co-chairs Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-CA) and Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), sent a letter to President Obama asking that he protect Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security as he continues to work on a deal to raise the debt ceiling. The Task Force stressed that cuts to benefits in these programs would have a profoundly negative impact on the lives, and health, of older Americans.

"I am pleased that President Obama has begun to articulate a plan to withdraw U.S. troops from Afghanistan. However, I am concerned about the pace of the drawdown, and I urge the President to go beyond the reductions he announced tonight and lay out a plan for a swift and sizeable redeployment of U.S. forces.
WASHINGTON, DC (June 15, 2011) – Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) today introduced legislation to address increasing hospital mortality rates and preventable medical errors caused by nurse understaffing. The Nurse Staffing Standards for Patient Safety and Quality Care Act of 2011 would establish a federal minimum standard in all hospitals for direct care registered nurse-to-patient staffing ratios.  The bill would greatly improve patient care while helping to restrict the nursing shortage that has left hospitals across the country dangerously understaffed.
