House Passes Schakowsky Amendment that Would Increase Accountability

WASHINGTON, DC (May 28, 2010) — Today Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) successfully offered an amendment to look at current private contractor oversight in Afghanistan and lessen the United States' reliance on reckless contractors.  Schakowsky co-introduced the amendment with Reps. Health Care Reform Mandates that the Provision Begin in September; Some Insurers Started Early to Prevent a Coverage Gap for College Grads

Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) sent a letter to Illinois' insurance companies and major private employers that self insure (provide insurance directly to employees) urging them to immediately start offering health care reform's dependent coverage benefit for individuals up to age 26.

WASHINGTON, DC (May 21, 2010) — Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) joined 77 other House Democrats in sending a letter to President Obama calling on him to ensure that Shell Oil's plan to drill five exploratory wells in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve this summer–as early as July 1–will be delayed. The leases to drill in the Arctic's Chukchi Sea were sold by the Bush Administration to Shell in 2008.

Illinois' 9th District Winners Hail from High Schools in Norridge, Skokie, Niles, and Chicago

CHICAGO, IL (May 17, 2010) — Today Rep. Jan Schakowsky (IL-9) announced the Illinois 9th district's winners of the 2010 "An Artistic Discovery Congressional Art Competition....  This year's competition drew entries from 31 students and 13 area high schools.  Nationwide, the art competition has had hundreds of thousands of participants since its inception in 1984.

WASHINGTON, DC — (April 30, 2010) Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) issued the following statement in response to the voluntary recall of 7 million drop side cribs announced by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

"The recent recall of drop side cribs is a tragic reminder of why we need strong safety protections throughout the consumer product industry. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, at least 21 babies have died because the design of these drop side cribs allowed them to get pinned between the mattress and the side of the crib, causing suffocation.
