SCHAKOWSKY: PEOPLE WILL DIE IF WE CUT $10 BILLION FROM MEDICAID

MEDICAID EXPANSION NEEDED DUE TO HURRICANE KATRINA, INCREASES IN POVERTY AND UNINSURED RATES

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky today spoke out against cuts to Medicaid in a hearing before the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Representative Schakowsky said that due to the Hurricane, and the number of middle class Americans who have slipped below the poverty line and lost their health insurance, Medicaid should be strengthened and expanded, rather than cut by $10 billion.

SCHAKOWSKY STATEMENT ON THE APPROVAL OF $10.5 BILLION IN EMERGENCY SUPPLEMENTAL APPROPRIATIONS FOR HURRICANE VICTIMS

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky, a Chief Deputy Democratic Whip, today released a statement on the approval of a $10.5 billion emergency supplemental appropriation for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The emergency supplemental passed the Senate yesterday, and will provide immediate funding for hurricane relief efforts.

The statement from Representative Schakowsky is below:

"The $10.5 billion dollars that Congress provided in emergency aid today is just a first step in addressing this national crisis."

AUGUST 29, 2005SCHAKOWSKY: IRAQI CONSTITUTION UNDERMINES RIGHTS OF WOMEN, RELIGIOUS MINORITIES

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky today released a statement on the Iraqi constitution presented to the Iraqi National Assembly on Sunday. The Constitution includes a provision declaring Islam to be the official religion of the state and stipulates that no law passed can contradict the rules of Islam. The Constitution also will place experts in Sharia, such as Islamic clerics, on the Supreme Federal Court of Iraq. The Iraqi people will now decide whether to approve the Constitution in an October 15th referendum.

NEW REPORTS SHOWS THOUSANDS OF VETERANS IN 9TH DISTRICT TO LOSE BENEFITS UNDER PRESIDENT'S BUDGET

WASHINGTON, DC - The Democratic Staff on the House Government Reform Committee today released a report requested by U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky showing the impact of President Bush's FY06 budget on veterans' health care in the 9th Congressional District. The report shows that thousands of veterans in the 9th District would be denied VA health care or VA benefits under President Bush's FY06 budget for the Department of Veterans Affairs.

CHICAGO, IL - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Chief Deputy Democratic Whip, today released a statement calling for a careful review of videoconferencing in immigration removal hearings. Schakowsky's announcement came as the Chicago Appleseed Fund for Justice and the Legal Assistance Foundation released a study showing that immigrants who do not actually appear in the courtroom and instead testify before a camera from a remote location face more barriers to making their case.
