Dear Editor:
The June 14, 1999, editorial "Welfare Reform's Good Report Card," failed to make the grade. The editorial did not mention in any detail the detrimental impact of the welfare reform bill on the hundreds of thousands of low-income families who lost their health insurance and are now without any medical coverage.

WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) and members of Congress expressed concern and outrage about the safety of thirteen Iranian Jews who were arbitrarily arrested and imprisoned on the eve of the Jewish holiday of Passover.
Schakowsky cosponsored a Concurrent Resolution introduced by Representative Brad Sherman (D-CA) condemning " in the strongest possible terms, the recent arrest of members of Iran's Jewish minority" and calling for their immediate release.

Pointing to the support of national seniors, labor, and consumer organizations for the Prescription Drug Fairness for Seniors Act, HR 664, U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) today warned pharmaceutical companies that their practice of overcharging seniors for prescription drugs would come to an end.
SCHAKOWSKY HAILS HOUSEFAILURE TO PASS NRA GUN BILL
WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) called the House's failure to pass gun legislation written by the National Rifle Association and the gun lobby a victory for the American people. The House passed another measure that would allow the posting of the Ten Commandments in public buildings, including classrooms.
Schakowsky said, "The House's answer to gun violence is Ten Commandments in the classroom, while the Senate gave us common sense gun safety legislation."
SCHAKOWSKY DENOUNCES ASSAULT ON FIRST AMENDMENT
WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-CA) today denounced the assault on the First Amendment and called this attack "an intrusion into the personal lives of every American."
Schakowsky spoke today on the House Floor against an amendment offered by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Henry Hyde (R-IL) during debate on the juvenile justice bill. She said, "Far from 'putting parents in charge', this Culture of Violence Amendment puts 'Big Brother' squarely in control of the games, art, movies, books, and other materials available to our children."
SCHAKOWSKY, WOMEN MEMBERS OF CONGRESS JOIN PRESIDENT ATROSE GARDEN TO CALL ON CONGRESS TO PASS GUN SAFETY BILLS
WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) today participated in a Rose Garden news conference with President Clinton and a bipartisan group of women House members to call on Congress to pass gun safety measures.
The measures include the sale of child-safety locks with each handgun, instant background checks at gun shows, and the importation ban of ammunition magazines with a capacity of ten or more rounds of ammunitions.

WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) and the American
Legion Auxiliary Unit #473 presented a U.S. flag to immigrants and refugees learning U.S.
civics and history at the Chinese Mutual Aid Association (CMAA).
The flag donation was made during an official ceremony held on Flag Day, June 14, 1999.
