EVANSTON, IL - Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip and Chair of the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus Providers and Clinics Task Force, released the following statement on the 47th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision:

"Forty-seven years ago today, the United States Supreme Court issued a decisive and transformative ruling in favor of reproductive health care as a constitutional right in the case of Roe v. Wade. The ruling was a victory for women across the United States and has saved countless lives by bringing abortions out of back alleys and into the health care setting, where they should be.

The bill would lower prices and increase competition in the generic pharmaceutical market by establishing an Office of Drug Manufacturing within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) tasked with manufacturing select generic drugs and offering them to consumers at a fair price that guarantees affordable patient access.

The Trump Administration’s rule would impose unnecessary and onerous burdens on insurers and consumers with the ultimate goal of eliminating abortion coverage in the Affordable Care Act marketplace and denying consumers their right to comprehensive health insurance. This rule would, for example, require that insurance companies send a separate bill for abortion care and require consumers to pay a separate bill from their premium for abortion care. The rule could impact as many as three million people across the United States.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip and Chair of the Energy and Commerce Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee, reacted after a split 5th Circuit Court of Appeals panel ruled 2 to 1 against the Affordable Care Act's (ACA) individual mandate. The individual mandate is a central part of the ACA, requiring everyone to have health care coverage or pay a penalty with their annual tax filings. The circuit instructed the District Court, which had previously struck down the entirety of the Affordable Care Act, to determine the next steps, including the possibility of again striking down the ACA.
