Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip and Vice Chair of the Democracy Reform Task Force, released the following statement on her selection to serve as Chairwoman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce’s Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee:

“I’m honored to have been selected by my colleagues to chair the Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee. Consumer protection is what drew me to public life, and I look forward to advancing a renewed emphasis on the safety of products our families use every day.

This month, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip, led a letter signed by 70 of her colleagues calling for the Social Security Administration (SSA) to abandon their anti-union policies and bad-faith negotiations with AFGE. The Congresswoman, along with a few members who signed the letter, released the following statements:

WASHINGTON –Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), along with Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus Co-Chairs Diana DeGette (D-CO) and Barbara Lee (D-CA) led over 170 House Democrats in opposing the Trump Administration’s latest attack on a women’s access to abortion. Members of the Senate sent a similar letter signed by 34 members, led by Senator patty Murray (D-WA), Ranking member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee.

"What began as a campaign gimmick designed to fire up white nationalist crowds, has morphed into a giant poison pill that is impacting the lives of millions of Americans. More than 800,000 federal employees are working without pay. Funding for food stamps, and to enforce the Violence Against Women act, is running out. And, that is only the start.

Neither the President nor the outgoing Republican majority in the House seem to care about the impact the shutdown is having on the hard-working federal employees who make all of our communities safer and stronger.”
