Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip and Vice Chair of the Democracy Reform Task Force, released the following statement regarding the deal to temporarily end the partial government shutdown:

“Like millions of other Americans I am pleased that the President is backing away from the shutdown that was his doing. Every day I have called for an immediate reopening of the government in order to give Congress a chance to craft a bipartisan solution for border security. Unfortunately it took President Trump 35 days to listen while hard working Americans suffered and millions were put at risk.

Today, U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) and U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) introduced a resolution to designate January 25^th, 2019,as Women’s Health Research Day. Their legislation aims to recognize the need to increase awareness of sex- and gender-based biomedical research, which the National Institutes of Health did not consider prior to 2016, the underrepresentation of women in past biomedical research and the importance of inclusive health research for women.

“Over forty years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a decisive ruling of 7-2 in favor of women’s health and reproductive rights in the case of Roe v. Wade. The ruling brought abortions out of the dark and gave women control over their bodies and health. The ruling did not mark the beginning of abortions, but it did mark the end of women dying from them.
