Schakowsky Statement on Continuing Resolution
WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (IL-09) released the following statement on the continuing resolution to keep government programs and services functioning until March 14, 2025:
“Today, I voted in favor of a continuing resolution to keep our government open and funded. Republicans, under the leadership of President Musk and his puppet Donald Trump, had us on a collision course towards a government shutdown right before the holidays which would have forced our troops to work without pay, harmed small businesses, risked air travel disruptions, endangered access to food assistance for millions of mothers and their children, and so much more. Not only would a shutdown have hurt working families, but it would also have damaged our economy and endangered our national security.
“Earlier this week, Democrats and Republicans reached a deal on a bipartisan package to further enhance Americans’ health care and protect consumers, but Republicans broke their promise. While today’s continuing resolution did not include everything I wanted, we could not let the government shut down. By refusing to raise the debt ceiling, for now, we have blocked Donald Trump’s ability to give handouts to the wealthiest Americans and big corporations. Make no mistake about it, this vote is not only a victory for the Democrats, who worked diligently to avert a shutdown, but most importantly for the American people.
“Republicans should stop holding the American economy hostage and start governing responsibly. They should stop their fruitless and mean-spirited crusade to snatch much needed benefits from millions of Americans. Their willingness to shut down the government to get their way is the height of irresponsibility. As we prepare to enter the 119th Congress, House Democrats will continue to oppose their cruel efforts and will keep fighting to protect Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, veterans’ health care, food assistance programs, and other vital programs.
“I urge the Senate to swiftly pass this continuing resolution to keep our government open."
