WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (IL-09) and U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) led their colleagues today in a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and White House Senior Advisor John Podesta calling for the United States to support the development and adoption of conflict of interest guidelines for the Conference of Parties (COP) presidency to address the influence of the fossil fuel industry at these climate talks. The letter follows the selection of Mukhtar Babayev as president-designate of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) COP29, marking the second year in a row that COP will be headed by a fossil fuel executive.
