Washington, DC– Rep. Jan Schakowsky has introduced the Put a Registered Nurse in the Nursing Home Act, which would require nursing homes and skilled nursing facilities that receive Medicare and/or Medicaid reimbursement to have a direct-care Registered Nurse (RN) on duty 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Washington, D.C.– Rep. Jan Schakowsky introduced H.R. 5372, the Patriot Employer Tax Credit Act on Thursday. The legislation provides tax credits to companies that invest in American workers instead of rewarding companies that ship jobs overseas. Reps. Raul Grijalva, Robin Kelly, and Barbara Lee joined as cosponsors of the bill. Senator Dick Durbin introduced the bill in the Senate.

“I am pleased the House Intelligence Committee has approved a comprehensive, bipartisan report concluding that there was no intelligence failure surrounding the September 11, 2012 attack on our facility in Benghazi, Libya.

Washington, D.C.– “Today’s Trustees report shows that Medicare and Social Security are strong and can continue to provide guaranteed, earned benefits for decades to come.

According to the Trustees, Social Security’s current $2.8 trillion surplus will grow to $2.9 trillion by 2020. It can pay full benefits through 2033, 75% of benefits after that. Improvements we made to Medicare in the Affordable Care Act – including unprecedented new anti-fraud tools – have extended the life of its Trust Fund another 4 years to 2030.

Washington, D.C. – Rep. Paul Ryan, Chairman of the House Budget Committee and author of the draconian Republican budget, today offered his ideas for dealing with poverty in America.

Even before examining his new "anti-poverty" agenda, it's worth remembering the Ryan Budget which passed the House last April; that budget would cut SNAP (formerly called Food Stamps) by $137 billion, cut 300,000 students from the school lunch program, cut $732 billion from Medicaid, and drastically reduce federal spending on areas like medical research, education, and housing assistance.

Today, Rep. Jan Schakowsky sent a letter to Walgreens CEO Gregory Wasson expressing her opposition to the Illinois company’s rumored consideration of a plan to relocate its headquarters to Switzerland in order to avoid U.S. taxes. The move, called inversion, allows Walgreens to avoid U.S. taxation by purchasing a smaller European firm and relocating its headquarters on paper, while maintaining the majority of its business operations in the United States. Doing so would allow the company to dodge an estimated $4 billion in taxes over the next five years.
