CHICAGO — Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky held a press event with 48th Ward Alderman Harry Osterman, the Greater Chicago Food Depository, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and others to help raise awareness about available resources that can end child hunger.
WASHINGTON, DC — On June 20, Representatives Jan Schakowsky and Raul Grijalva led 121 of their House colleagues on a letter to Social Security Acting Administrator Carolyn W. Colvin, urging her to reverse a decision to limit access to important services at local SSA offices. Those services included in-person requests for benefit verification statements and copies of Social Security numbers (known as Numi-lites).
Washington, D.C.– Today House Democrats released their 100-Day Action Plan to jumpstart the middle class. Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on the plan:
“House Republicans’ flawed priorities have stalled middle class opportunity while consistently stacking the deck for wealthy special interests.
Instead of tax incentives to create good paying jobs to ‘Make It In America,’ they give tax favors to corporations that ship jobs overseas.
Washington, D.C. – Rep. Jan Schakowsky offered an amendment to the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations bill on Tuesday that would prohibit federal funds from being used to contract with companies that have violated the Fair Labor Standards Act. The amendment passed by voice vote. Rep. Schakowsky issued the following statement following the vote:
Washington, D.C.– “Last month the Supreme Court delivered a critical blow to women’s health in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc. In that ruling the Court determined that closely-held, for-profit corporations can deny their women employees access to contraceptives based on the corporation’s religious objections.
Washington, D.C. – “Speaker Boehner and House Republicans should make up their minds. First, they waste time and taxpayer dollars on 52 votes to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Then, they want to waste time and taxpayer dollars to sue President Obama for executive actions he took to delay the employer mandate of the Affordable Care Act. No wonder the American public is confused. The announcement of the Boehner/Republican planned lawsuit came on the very day we got new evidence on how well the Affordable Care Act is working for Americans.”
Chicago – On July 2, 1964 President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act. Today, 50 years later, Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement commemorating the anniversary:
Today, rates for new student loans will increase from 3.86 percent to 4.66 percent for undergraduate students, from 5.41 percent to 6.21 percent for Stafford loans for graduate students, and from 6.41 percent to 7.21 percent for graduate and parent plus loans.
Washington, D.C. – Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement in response to reports that the bodies of the three kidnapped Jewish teens missing since June 12 had been found:
“I wish to express my deepest condolences to the families of Eyal Yifrach, Gilad Shaar, and Naftali Fraenkel. Like so many others around the world, I had hoped for their safe return, but unfortunately our worst fears have been realized. These innocent children were intentionally and brutally murdered. Such a heinous act cannot go unpunished or without universal condemnation.
Washington, D.C. – Today, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a narrow 5-4 decision in Harris v. Quinn that eliminates “fair share” fee arrangements for Illinois home healthcare workers. The decision does not affect those arrangements for other public employees such as teachers, hospital nurses or clerical workers. Under “fair share” fee arrangements, workers pay the cost of negotiating for their benefits even if they choose not join a union. Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on this ruling:
