Washington, DC (June 25, 2013) — Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on President Obama's Climate Action Plan:

"Today President Obama announced a new Climate Action Plan. The plan lays the groundwork for executive actions to come in the months and years ahead to reduce carbon emissions, address climate change, and help put the United States in position to lead the global clean energy revolution.

"Our country is at a climate crossroads. The policies being advocated by the House Republican majority will push us to the brink of irreversible climate change in the very near future. Strong action is needed to protect public health and the environment.

Washington, DC (June 25, 2013) — Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court's decision on the Voting Rights Act:

"I am deeply disappointed that this morning, the Supreme Court struck down an integral part of the Voting Rights Act.

"Over the last several decades, the Voting Rights Act has played an essential role in helping our country become more accountable and more responsive by protecting citizens' right to vote and be represented, which is the foundation of our democracy. Today's decision is a major setback for voting rights, and it will have very real, negative consequences for voters.

Washington, DC (June 24, 2013) — Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on the Department of Transportation delay on the rule to prevent backover deaths:

"Last week, the Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that it would, for the fifth time, delay the finalization of a rule to prevent rear backover deaths. I am angered and disappointed by the NHTSA's decision to finalize the rule to prevent these preventable incidents.

At age 28, Lori never thought she would become too sick to work. But she did. Lori has PTSD, Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Fibromyalgia. In 2009, simple tasks became extremely painful to perform.

After successfully applying for Social Security Disability benefits, she could barely make ends meet. Although it was incredibly painful, Lori began working part time to pay for food, rent and basic needs.

Mr. Speaker, I rise to tell my colleagues about one of my constituents, Heriberto León, who wrote recently to explain the real-life consequences of the sequester, for him and for our country.

Mr. León is not asking Congress for much — he simply wants to be able to do his job as an EPA community involvement coordinator, helping to improve access to clean air and clean water for communities in the Chicagoland area.

Washington, DC — The House of Representatives approved a defense authorization bill today containing a measure that will require that military-branded garments made in Bangladesh and sold at base retail stores owned by the Department of Defense, known as exchanges, comply with an enforceable fire and building safety accord that will improve conditions in Bangladesh ready-made garment factories. The amendment was authored by Reps. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) and George Miller (D-Calif.).
