Washington, DC (April 11, 2013) — Rep. Jan Schakowsky voiced her opposition to chained CPI as part of any budget deal today at the Congressional Progressive Caucus press conference:

"The chained CPI was a Boehner/McConnell demand in the negotiations — it was a bad idea then and it is a bad idea now. We should not be negotiating with those who want to take Social Security benefits hostage — seniors are not a bargaining chip. It's time that the Republicans agree to raise revenues that put people back to work in good-paying jobs without demanding cuts to Medicare and Social Security in exchange."

Washington, DC (April 10, 2013) — Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on voting against the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act:

"Our country is facing serious cyber threats and all Americans will benefit from strong cybersecurity protections. However the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) must balance cybersecurity concerns with measures that protect the privacy and civil liberties that Americans deserve. I voted against CISPA because I believe that balance hasn't been achieved in the current bill.

"President Obama's budget recognizes the need to invest in education and children, create good jobs, and eliminate the harsh, across-the-board cuts from sequestration. Those are necessary steps but they can't come at the expense of seniors and programs such as Social Security and Medicare.

Washington, DC (April 9, 2013) — Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on Equal Pay Day:

"Today is Equal Pay Day but the effects of the gender gap are felt by women and their families every day of the year. On average women still earn only 77 cents for every dollar earned by men. For minority women the wage gap is even larger. African American women on average earn 64 cents, Latinas on earn 55 cents and older women, those above 50, earn 75 cents for every dollar. According to a new report in my congressional district, men earned on average $50,890 compared to women, who earned $43,196.

"Today I was honored to participate in a Forum to highlight the economic struggles of part-time workers. Almost a quarter of our workforce is now composed of part-time workers, yet many of them do not have access to critical work-related health and retirement benefits. To correct that problem I have introduced the Part-Time Worker Bill of Rights.

"I voted against Rep. Paul Ryan's Republican budget today because the Ryan Republican budget reflects everything that the American people rejected in the last election. The Ryan budget asks nothing from the wealthiest Americans and rich corporations that ship jobs and profits overseas, while it turns Medicare into a voucher program and slashes investments that create jobs. The Ryan budget would cost 2 million jobs in 2014 alone, according to the Economic Policy Institute.
