CHICAGO, IL - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Chief Deputy Democratic Whip, today released a statement calling for a careful review of videoconferencing in immigration removal hearings. Schakowsky's announcement came as the Chicago Appleseed Fund for Justice and the Legal Assistance Foundation released a study showing that immigrants who do not actually appear in the courtroom and instead testify before a camera from a remote location face more barriers to making their case.

SCHAKOWSKY STATEMENT ON THE NOMINATION OF JUDGE JOHN G. ROBERTS TO THE SUPREME COURT
WASHINGTON, DC -- U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky issued the following statement on President Bush's nomination of Judge John G. Roberts to the Supreme Court:
"I hope that we don't remember July 19, 2005 as the day President Bush turned back the clock on the Constitutional rights and protections on which all Americans rely. Based on his record, I am greatly concerned that Judge Roberts' confirmation to the Supreme Court would allow right-wing minority positions to be imposed on the majority of Americans."
