WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), ranking member on the Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection Subcommittee, today voted to protect the First Amendment and against legislation that would limit free speech.

CHICAGO, IL - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Chief Deputy Whip, voiced her resounding opposition to President Bush's Fiscal Year 2006 budget, adding that "millions of Americans should not stand for a President who puts tax cuts for the wealthy ahead of the needs of veterans, seniors, and the homeless."

WASHINGTON, D.C. - In an open letter to President Bush that was published in today's edition of the Chicago Sun-Times, U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) writes:
Under your budget, the vast majority of Americans will likely be asked to sacrifice, with one exception: the millionaires who can most afford to give something up. Their tax cuts - the same tax cuts that brought us unprecedented deficits - would be protected and likely even extended under your proposal.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Following the reintroduction of legislation that would limit individuals' right to free speech, U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), the ranking Democrat on the Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection Subcommittee, vowed to defend against Congressional efforts to weaken the First Amendment.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - During a Commerce Committee hearing today hearing on H.R. 29, the Spy Act, U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), today said: "Spyware is a serious threat to consumer privacy and potentially a powerful tool for identity theft, a serious crime that is on the rise." Schakowsky, who is the ranking Democrat on the Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection Subcommittee, applauded the bipartisan efforts to move forward this legislation that would protect consumers.

SCHAKOWSKY ANNOUNCES OPPOSITION TO BUSH ADMINISTRATION'S IMPENDING $80 BILLION IN ADDITIONAL FUNDING FOR WAR IN IRAQ
WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) today announced that she would oppose the Bush Administration's impending request for an additional $80 Billion to continue the war in Iraq. Congress so far has approved more than $200 billion in supplemental, or additional, appropriations sought by the White House for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The bulk of the funding, however, has been for the invasion and occupation of Iraq.

"The time has come for the United States to withdraw our troops from the battlefield of a war that should never have been waged. There was no real justification for sending our brave young men and women to fight in Iraq, and there is even less reason to keep them there now to die in ever increasing numbers.

As patriotic Americans, we are respectful of the public ceremony that is taking place in Washington today during which the President of the United States swears to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. But we must also take an oath to preserve, protect and defend the values that we hold dear and that we believe are shared by the majority of everyday American families.
