Nuclear Energy
Yesterday, we honored the sacrifices made by those on D-Day, and the millions of others who aided the war effort worldwide. I have had the great privilege of meeting brave constituents who fought valiantly that fateful day. We owe our freedom and the reach of democracy in our world to them.
In paying tribute to our fallen heroes, we must recommit to honoring our active-duty military personnel and our veterans. Not only do they deserve our respect and recognition, but they also deserve to know that we have their backs.
I have long been a critic of nuclear power based on my concerns for both safety and cost. The Fukushima Daiichi disaster in Japan has shown the danger of relying on nuclear power for our energy supply.
As a member of the President's National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, I proposed the elimination of federal guarantees to limit liability in case of nuclear accidents and subsidies for nuclear power plants. I have consistently opposed nuclear power because of ongoing concerns over safety and waste disposal.
