WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Jan Schakowsky issued the following statement after the reintroduction of the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act:
“I am pleased to join Representatives Guinta, Lujan Grisham and Buchanan in reintroducing the SAFE Act (H.R. 1942). This critically important legislation would help us end the horrific practice of horse slaughter once and for all.
I want to thank the animal welfare organizations that have been so engaged on this issue, including the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) and the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) for their tireless efforts to combat this slaughter.
WASHINGTON, DC -- On Earth Day, U.S. Reps. Mark Pocan (D-WI) and Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), members of the Safe Climate Caucus, introduced the Protect Our Public Lands Act, H.R. 1902. The legislation is the strongest anti-fracking bill introduced in Congress to date and would ban fracking on public lands.

“Like many other Members of Congress, I have been outspoken about my many concerns with Trade Promotion Authority (also known as “Fast Track”) and the need for significant reform to the way our nation approaches free trade agreements. Unfortunately, the Hatch-Wyden-Ryan Trade Promotion Authority Bill is more of the same. This legislation would all but ensure the passage of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) without significant Congressional oversight.

WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) introduced the Stop Corporate Tax Dodging Act today to stop profitable corporations from sheltering income overseas in the Cayman Islands and other tax havens to avoid paying U.S. taxes. The legislation also would end tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas.

WASHINGTON, DC – Today a federal jury sentenced four former Blackwater security personnel who were convicted in the horrific shooting of dozens of Iraqis in Baghdad on September 16, 2007. One of the four was given life without the possibility of parole and the other three were given 30-year sentences. Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on their sentencing:
“I am pleased to see that the perpetrators of the Nisour Square shootings will be punished for their heinous actions over seven years ago. I am thankful that justice has been served in this case. What occurred in Nisour Square in September 2007 was a true tragedy, and we must ensure similar actions do not happen again.
