More on Federal Budget
This week, I was excited to begin welcoming guests to my new office in the Rayburn House Office Building. Now, I have a magnificent view of the United States Capitol. I am so appreciative to my staff who worked so hard to make this move happen. If you are ever in Washington, please come by and check out my wonderful new space!
On Friday, Congress passed legislation to continue funding the government, avoiding a government shutdown. A shutdown would have sidelined federal services, such as anti-poverty food assistance and customer service functions at the Social Security Administration.
WASHINGTON - Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip and Chair of the Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee of the Energy and Commerce Committee, released the following statement after voting against H.R. 7900, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2023.
Today, the Honorable Michael J. McCord, Under Secretary of Defense Comptroller/Chief Financial Officer for DoD, testified about the U.S. Defense budget request for FY23. I asked about a recent report that highlights the gouging of the Defense Department by vendors, which ends up costing taxpayers upwards of 3000% of the cost to make an item.
In my weekly update for my constituents, I discuss the Omnibus funding bill we passed this week. This bill includes funding for many important priorities, and additional assistance for Ukraine. I also discuss the Violence Against Women Act and the Emmett Till Anti-Lynching bill, as well as several other topics.
In this week's update, I talk about the situation with Russia and the Ukraine, a recent hearing on the debt limit, and the recent discovery of classified information at Trump's Mar-a-Lago.
As a member of the Budget Committee, I participated in a hearing on February 16, 2022, to discuss the debt limit.
This week, I talk about the vote on the debt ceiling. I also talk about my hearing in the #SubConsumer subcommittee on supply chain and manufacturing issues we are seeing. This week, I introduced a bill dealing with social media platforms and the harms their algorithms may cause.
This week, I provide some updates on the Debt Ceiling vote and the work on the Build Back Better bill. I also discuss President Biden's visit to the Chicago area, and some related COVID-19 updates. This week I introduced some legislation, including the Safer Beauty Bill Package and the INFORM Consumer Act.
