Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Chief Deputy Whip and Ranking Member of the House Subcommittee on Digital Commerce and Consumer Protection, and Congressman Ben Ray Lujan, member of the Subcommittee, sent a letter to the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety, Insurance, and Data Security regarding Uber’s concealment of its 2016 data breach from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) as it negotiated a consent agreement with the FTC for an earlier breach.

This week, Rep. Jan Schakowsky met with 4 artists from the Arts of Life Studio, a non-profit in Glenview, Illinois whose mission is to “advance the creative arts community by providing artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities a collective space to expand their practice and strengthen their leadership."

Each of the four artists who met with Rep. Schakowsky will have a piece of art hung up in the Congresswoman’s Glenview office for the next year. After the meeting, Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement:

Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Chief Deputy Whip, released the following statement in response to a bill being considered by the Polish government, which would make it a crime to suggest any level of Polish participation in in war crimes during the Holocaust.

“If we are to avoid repeating the haunting mistakes of our past, we must be willing to speak openly and honestly about them – no matter how difficult or uncomfortable it may feel.

Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Chief Deputy Whip, released the following statement on the imminent demolition of seven structures in the Palestinian village of Susya after the Israeli Supreme Court declined to issue an injunction to prevent these demolitions:

“The Israeli Supreme Court’s decision to allow for the demolition of seven structures in Susya is extremely upsetting. For the sake of Israel’s security, the fate of Susya’s inhabitants, and the future promise of a two-state solution, I hope that the Israeli government does not move forward with these demolitions.

Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Chief Deputy Whip, released the following statement on the first anniversary of President Trump's Muslim Ban:

"A year ago today, less than a week into his Presidency and on Holocaust Remembrance Day, Donald Trump blew out the torch held by the Statue of Liberty. Putting his xenophobia and islamophobia on full display, he attempted to instate his now notorious Muslim Ban. This illegal, immoral policy will go down in the annals of American history as an embarrassing and hateful blemish – a sad reminder of how far we still have to go to become the compassionate, egalitarian nation we strive to be.

“International Holocaust Remembrance Day marks the 73rd anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Today, I join in remembering and honoring the 6 million Jewish lives lost in the Holocaust. As a Jewish American and the representative of the 9thCongressional district of Illinois, one of the largest concentration of Holocaust survivors in the country, I personally feel the importance of this day.

Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Chief Deputy Whip, released the following statement on the Trump Administration’s immigration proposal, released late yesterday:

“The Trump Administration has been holding Dreamers hostage since September, and we’re only now getting the ransom note.

“In exchange for releasing Dreamers from the hell that he created for them, President Trump wants to increase deportations, slash legal immigration to historic lows, turn away and deport asylum seekers, give himself the ability to detain immigrants even longer, and waste $25 billion in taxpayer dollars on a useless, hateful wall.

Today, U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) and U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), along with 27 of their House and Senate colleagues, introduced a resolution to designate January 25th, 2018, as Women’s Health Research Day. Women’s Health Research Day recognizes the need to increase awareness of sex- and gender-based biomedical research,—which the National Institutes of Health did not consider prior to 2016—the underrepresentation of women in past biomedical research, and the importance of inclusive health research for women.
