On Wednesday, Congresswoman Schakowsky gave the following floor speech in response to the shooting in Orlando:
“On Monday the House stood for the 27th time to bow our heads in silence for the unspeakable murders that took place in Orlando.”
“A moment of silence for gun violence. That’s what we do. We have stood and we have prayed. One time I shouted out – that was since the murders at Sandy Hook – One time I stood up and said ‘Now let’s do something!’”
Today, Representative Jan Schakowsky submitted the following statement to the House Foreign Affairs Committee in support of the H.R. 5332, the Women, Peace and Security Act, which she introduced along with Representatives: Noem, Royce, and Engel. The bill passed out of full committee markup this morning:

WASHINGTON– Today, Representatives Bobby Scott (VA-03), Frederica S. Wilson (FL-24), Carolyn Maloney (NY-12) and Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), introduced a legislative package to update the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) to help workers balance work and family life. FMLA was enacted more than 20 years ago to provide workers with job-protected leave to care for themselves or a family member. Since its enactment, the FMLA has been used more than 200 million times and ensured that those workers did not have to choose between the jobs they need or caring for the family they love.
