I thank His Holiness Pope Francis for sharing his vision for the world before a Joint Meeting of Congress. He called on us as legislators and as Americans to promote the common good and meet our common needs. His message was powerful – that we need to look out for each other and for the planet we all call home.

CHICAGO – Today, Rep. Jan Schakowsky joined Katie Jordan, Secretary/Treasurer of the Illinois Alliance for Retired Americans (ARA) and Charlie Hogan, a retiree and Illinois ARA member, in opposing a proposal to exempt the pharmaceutical industry from current patent review procedures. The carveout being pushed by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) would increase out-of-pocket prescription drug costs and add billions of dollars to private insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid costs according to a report by the Center for Economic and Policy Research, “The Impact of Exempting the Pharmaceutical Industry from Patent Reviews.”

“Today, on the 14th anniversary of September 11, 2001, we honor the thousands who lost their lives in this devastating terrorist attack on our country. We will never forget that horrifying day; even now we still grieve for the innocent lives that were taken away or changed forever.

Washington, DC – “Today, the Energy and Commerce Committee Democrats announced that the ongoing investigation into Planned Parenthood has shown what we already know – that Planned Parenthood did not break any laws and continues to provide excellent health care to millions of woman across the country. Over the past few months, the Committee has painstakingly conducted interviews and held bipartisan briefings, all of which have shown that there is no evidence of any wrongdoing by Planned Parenthood.

CHICAGO – “American workers are the best in the world. They teach our children, care for our sick and elderly, build our communities and much more. This Labor Day, we must recognize the tireless devotion of our working men and women – and stand up for them.

Throughout this year, I have been impressed and inspired by hard working Americans who are fighting for their rights. I have joined marches and protests with workers in Chicago, New York and Washington, D.C. – and the fight continues.
