“The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear a challenge to Texas laws that restrict access to safe abortions – the most important case for women’s health and reproductive choice since Roe v. Wade. The stakes couldn’t be higher. Decades of advances in women’s health and women’s rights are on the line.

“Kaylyn Pryor’s life was filled with so much hope and promise. Last night’s tragic shooting took place as she was on her way home from her grandmother’s and has ripped from us another young life only just beginning to realize their full potential. This senseless act of violence is yet another reminder of the work we must do to root out violence from our communities. As an Evanston native, I feel particularly touched by this tragedy. My thoughts and prayers are with her family during this truly difficult time.”

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reached a consent order with Takata over the Japanese part supplier’s defective airbags that have caused at least eight deaths and at least 100 serious injuries. The settlement includes the largest-ever fine levied by NHTSA – $200 million. It also prohibits Takata from entering into any new contracts after Oct. 31 to build airbag inflators with ammonium nitrate and a desiccant – the chemical components suspected to cause the violent airbag explosions that necessitated the recalls. Rep. Schakowsky issued the following statement in response:

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Representative Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), released the following statement after voting for the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015:

“I am pleased that House Republicans and Democrats could come together on a budget that ensures that we pay our bills and keep the government open. I made explicitly clear that I would not support any budget agreement that cut Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid benefits, and this budget contains no such toxic cuts. In addition, this budget ensures that Medicare Part B recipients won’t see a drastic and unaffordable $55 increase in their premiums.

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Representatives Jan Schakowsky (IL-09) and Ruben Gallego (AZ-07) released a letter signed by 69 other Members to House Leadership refusing to sign any budget deal that includes cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid benefits. Because of the commitment of these Members the budget agreement that was introduced this week does not contain harmful benefit cuts.
