CHICAGO – Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky released the following statement in response to the introduction of Trade Promotion Authority legislation in the House on Thursday:
“Like many other Members of Congress, I have been outspoken about my many concerns with Trade Promotion Authority (also known as “Fast Track”) and the need for significant reform to the way our nation approaches free trade agreements. Unfortunately, the Hatch-Wyden-Ryan Trade Promotion Authority Bill is more of the same. This legislation would all but ensure the passage of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) without significant Congressional oversight.

WASHINGTON, DC – Today a federal jury sentenced four former Blackwater security personnel who were convicted in the horrific shooting of dozens of Iraqis in Baghdad on September 16, 2007. One of the four was given life without the possibility of parole and the other three were given 30-year sentences. Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on their sentencing:
“I am pleased to see that the perpetrators of the Nisour Square shootings will be punished for their heinous actions over seven years ago. I am thankful that justice has been served in this case. What occurred in Nisour Square in September 2007 was a true tragedy, and we must ensure similar actions do not happen again.

CHICAGO – Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement after the announcement of the framework agreement for preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon:
“Today’s announcement of a framework for a comprehensive agreement between the United States, our allies, and Iran that will prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon is a significant diplomatic achievement.
The intrusive inspection regime that includes continuous surveillance of Iran’s enrichment facilities, uranium mines and mills, centrifuge production and storage facilities – the entire nuclear supply chain – makes it nearly impossible for Iran to ‘cheat’ without detection.
CHICAGO – Rep. Jan Schakowsky joined over three dozen members of Congress writing the House Appropriations Committee to request $25 million for Nonprofit Security Grant Program funding. Washington, D.C. – I am a long-time supporter of efforts to prevent harmful Medicare physician cuts by eliminating the inaccurate Sustainable Growth Rate formula. I have repeatedly cosponsored and voted for legislation to prevent those cuts. In 2007, 2009 and 2010, with my support, the House voted to fully repeal the SGR. Unfortunately, I could not support H.R. 2 today for three key reasons.
