STEM & Arts Education
I have long supported women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education. There is a significant gender disparity in this sector with women holding less than 25 percent of all STEM jobs in this country. It is critical that we continue to inspire young women to pursue educational and career opportunities in STEM-related fields. There is a tremendous opportunity for women to make a difference with America's innovative capacity and global competitiveness.
I have been a passionate advocate for the arts and arts education in Congress, both serving on the Congressional Arts Caucus and receiving an "A+" on the Arts Report Card. I have opposed decreases in funding for the National Endowment for the Arts and for the Arts in Education program at the U.S. Department of Education. There is no question that arts and humanities education not only create well-rounded human beings, but more responsible citizens who contribute to the richness of our cultural heritage.

One year ago this week, the world saw the worst perpetration of violence inflicted on the Jewish people since the Holocaust. The terrorist organization Hamas took the lives of over 1,200 people in Israel, injured over 3,000 more, and captured over 200 people – including many American citizens.
Fans are incredibly frustrated by how hard it has become to buy event tickets. With every ticketing debacle, from Beyoncé to Taylor Swift, and so many more, their frustration grows. Help could soon be on the way! My bill, the TICKET Act, just passed the House of Representatives with overwhelming support and would help make the ticketing process easier for all. Consumers deserve to be protected from fraudulent tickets, surprise costs, and excessive fees.
I had an absolutely fabulous week back home in the 9th Congressional District! I love getting to be out and about in our community, whether I am visiting a school, touring a non-profit organization, or meeting with local elected officials.
The United States is now on track to set a record in 2023 for mass killings. Just last week, a neo-Nazi with an arsenal of firearms killed eight people and wounded seven others at a Dallas-area shopping mall. These tragic mass shootings are in addition to the everyday shootings that we continue to see. We need action now. As a proud member of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, I have had conversations with my Republicans to see if there is anything at all they could agree to. We need universal background checks, a ban on assault weapons, and so much more.
As you may have heard, Kroger, which owns Mariano's, announced plans to purchase Albertsons, which owns Jewel. This could have major implications for grocery prices in our community. Kroger posted record earnings during the pandemic, including $132 billion in 2020. At the same time, Kroger decreased worker pay by 8.1%. This merger would lead to less competition, even higher grocery prices, and layoffs for employees. We must put American families first. I am proud to join Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) in calling on the FTC to block this deal.
