Economy

In recent years, Americans have become increasingly concerned that their data is being exploited and abused. These concerns are warranted because weak laws have allowed Big Tech to invade people’s privacy. The very narrow TikTok bill we voted on last week, which Republicans rushed to the floor for a vote under the guise of protecting our national security, fails to ensure that all tech companies and data brokers are taking the steps necessary to protect Americans’ privacy and data.

Following the collapse of the Silicon Valley Bank, I know many of you are feeling uneasy. I want to assure you, there is a piece of legislation that I am cosponsoring, the Secure Viable Banking Act, that would help restore needed protections to safeguard our economy. The failure of Silicon Valley Bank can be traced back to harmful Trump-era regulatory rollbacks. I voted against those rollbacks in 2018 for exactly this reason. I will continue working to protect the safety and soundness of our financial system and help ensure those responsible for this crisis are held accountable.

After months of far-right extremists hijacking our appropriations process, Congress has completed the final part of the FY 2024 budget, which will help Americans deal with high prices, sides with the hard-working middle class, protects women’s rights, and reinforces America’s global leadership. I am pleased to report that my final community project funding request was approved, which means, in total, I will be bringing home nearly $19 million to the 9th Congressional District of Illinois.

I am back in Washington for yet another busy week! Not only is President Joe Biden set to deliver his State of the Union Address this Thursday night, but Congress is finally prepared to act on our Fiscal Year 2024 budget.  For weeks, I have told you that far-right Republicans have hijacked the appropriations process in favor of extreme budget cuts and poison pill policies that will only harm Americans. I am pleased to report that a bipartisan agreement has been reached on six of the 12 appropriations bills, and we are expecting a vote this week.

The United States is now on track to set a record in 2023 for mass killings. Just last week, a neo-Nazi with an arsenal of firearms killed eight people and wounded seven others at a Dallas-area shopping mall. These tragic mass shootings are in addition to the everyday shootings that we continue to see. We need action now. As a proud member of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, I have had conversations with my Republicans to see if there is anything at all they could agree to. We need universal background checks, a ban on assault weapons, and so much more.

The Constitution makes it very clear that it is the duty of the United States to pay its debts. Nowhere in the Constitution does it justify sending our economy into a tailspin to avoid paying our bills. My Republican colleagues were content when Donald Trump raised the debt ceiling three times and gave the wealthiest Americans $2 trillion in tax cuts, but for some reason they have a problem with families trying to put food on the table and veterans trying to access health care.

I wish I could tell you that we have reached an agreement on raising the debt ceiling, which is really agreeing to continue paying the debts of the United States, but Republicans continue to insist on massive budget cuts. Cuts which, among many things, would strip health care from thousands of America’s veterans, seniors, and children. The Republicans in Congress are holding our economy and the American people hostage.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said the projected debt ceiling deadline is extended to June 5, four days later than previously estimated. In the meantime, Kevin McCarthy and the Republicans in Congress are still pushing for cruel budget cuts that will harm millions of Americans. One of my GOP colleagues even said that Republicans "don't feel like negotiating with their hostage." The lives of Americans are not a game. The GOP must stop holding the most vulnerable among us hostage. Democrats in Congress will continue to fight back against these awful proposals.

Thank you to the people of Illinois’ 9th Congressional District for once again choosing me to be your voice in Congress. It truly is the honor of a lifetime! The fight for equal rights for all, an economy that works for everyday Americans, not just the rich, reproductive rights, and environmental protections goes on. Keep the faith. Let's get to work.

Toys should bring joy to kids, not harm. For 38 years, the Illinois PIRG Education Fund (PIRG) has released the Trouble in Toyland report, which has resulted in federal legislation and many corrective actions by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and toy manufacturers.
