Women's Health
Thank you to the people of Illinois' 9th Congressional District for choosing me, once again, to be your voice in Congress. It is truly an honor! I will continue to fight for a more equitable and just world. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need assistance. Whether it be a Social Security problem, an immigration case, or a postal issue, just to name a few, my office is here to help.
I just left the House floor where I voted in favor of a continuing resolution to keep our government open and fully funded into January. This continuing resolution funds our government at fiscal year 2023 levels with no spending cuts. Today’s vote is not only a victory for the Democrats, who worked diligently to avoid a catastrophic government shutdown, but most importantly for the American people.
It is great to be back in the 9th Congressional District after Congress successfully passed a continuing resolution to keep our government funded until December 20, 2024. The bill passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 341-82. I am glad Democrats and Republicans were able to reach a bipartisan agreement to put the needs of everyday Americans first, and I am hoping we will be able to reach another bipartisan agreement at the end of the year to avert a government shutdown.
It has been 24 days since Hamas’ horrifying terrorist attack on Israel, in which more than 1,400 Israelis were killed and over 5,400 injured. Hamas also captured over 200 hostages, including several Americans. Jewish communities around the world are in shock, grieving, and scared of the increased antisemitism and violence that have been spurred by the war. Israel has a right to defend itself and its citizens in accordance with international law.
When Republicans promise to take away basic freedoms, we must believe them. Last week, Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) introduced legislation that would ban abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, nationwide. Meanwhile, in the House of Representatives, Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA) introduced a bill which would give pharmacists freer rein to refuse to provide medication they suspect could be used to terminate a pregnancy. While these bills are not likely to pass, we can see my colleagues' intentions.
I am back in Washington this week, and tomorrow, the House of Representatives is poised to pass a clean continuing resolution to keep our government open and funded through the end of the year. I am glad Democrats and Republicans were able to reach a bipartisan agreement to put the needs of everyday Americans first. Too much was at stake. I will continue fighting to ensure that any future budget bill is free from poison pill policy provisions.
If accurate, this leak would represent a tragic step backwards for equal rights under the law. This is an EMERGENCY. ANYONE who believes that women should be equal under the law — it is time we mobilize and fight back!! We cannot allow this FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT to be taken away. This is about BODILY AUTONOMY. Whatever we have to do to protest this - we have to do it! Roe was not the start of abortions, it was the end of women dying from them. WOMEN WILL NOT GO BACK!!!
Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade in June 2022, abortion laws and access to care have varied substantially from state to state. Illinois has taken steps to safeguard abortion rights and access. In January 2023, Governor JB Pritzker signed measures bolstering protections for personal reproductive health care and gender affirming care, safeguarding abortion providers and patients against out-of-state legal action, and ensuring insurance coverage for necessary care.
WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-IL-09) celebrated the Senate introduction of the Abortion is Health Care Everywhere Act. Schakowsky has already introduced H.R. 1670, the House companion bill, which now has 180 cosponsors. The Senate bill, which U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) introduced today, would repeal the 1973 Helms Amendment to the U.S. Foreign Assistance Act. This would ensure that U.S.
