Hunger in America
As the wealthiest nation in the world, it is unconscionable that millions of Americans including children, veterans, and the elderly, go hungry every day. That is why I have long supported vital nutrition programs and fought to protect them from Republican spending cuts.
The Special Supplemental Assistance Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) ensures that low-income pregnant women, postpartum women, breastfeeding women, infants, and children up to age 5 who are at nutritional risk are able to supplement their diets with nutritious food needed for the healthy development of infants and children. Children have always been the largest recipients of this important support that helps promote healthy eating habits and protect vulnerable families.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly called Food Stamps, is the last line of defense for more than 40 million Americans who face chronic hunger. More than 80 percent of SNAP households include a child, an elderly person, or someone with a disability. Unfortunately the Trump administration wants to slash the program and reduce benefits to a point below what is required to support a bare bones diet. I stand firm in protecting the most vulnerable Americans from cuts that would worsen the hunger crisis they already face.

After seven straight weeks in Washington, I wish I could tell you that Congress passed legislation to better the lives of everyday Americans. Unfortunately, I cannot. House Republicans spent the majority of the time putting forward legislation that has no chance of becoming law. Last week was a perfect example. In a partisan power grab, House Republicans voted to censure Rep.
An economic disaster has been averted thanks to President Biden and his negotiating team, who did the best they could in the midst of a hostage situation. Thanks to the president’s leadership, the Republicans were unable to make cuts to crucial programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. President Biden was able to protect his landmark pieces of legislation, the Inflation Reduction Act, including the bill's historic climate provisions, the Infrastructure Law, and the Chips and Science Act.
WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), a Chief Deputy Whip, Senior Budget Committee Member, and Executive Board Member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, released the following statement after voting against H.R. 3746, the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023:
On Friday, the Supreme Court granted the Department of Justice’s emergency stay application in Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA, preventing a lower court decision from going into effect that would have put women’s health at risk and undermined FDA’s medical judgment. For now, Mifepristone, which is used in 54% of all abortions, remains safe, legal, and available. But let me make it clear – the battle is not over. I will continue to fight and advocate for bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom.
For the first time since 1996, the Democratic National Convention is set to take place in Chicago! Reports show that the 2024 convention is expected to provide a well-needed $150 million boost to our economy. The eyes of the world will be watching, and I cannot wait to show off our magnificent city.
As I am sure you are aware, former President Donald Trump has been indicted by a New York grand jury and will be arraigned on Tuesday. According to reports, Trump faces more than 30 counts related to business fraud for allegedly concealing hush money payments to Stormy Daniels in order to cover-up their extramarital affair from voters during the closing days of his presidential campaign.
More than 40 million people rely on SNAP to ensure they have enough food on the table - the vast majority of them being children, seniors, and people with disabilities. As the richest country in the world, nobody should be left hungry. I vow to keep up the fight.
On Friday, I voted in favor of the Fiscal Year 2023 government funding legislation. This monumental funding package will have major implications for generations to come.
