EVANSTON – Amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL-09), a Senior Chief Deputy Whip, and U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) today announced bicameral legislation to provide a historic investment in the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) and Nurse Corps programs to cover the graduate education costs of approximately 300,000 clinicians in order to help address existing health workforce shortages throughout our health care system.

WASHINGTON - U.S. Representatives Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04), and Lori Trahan (MA-03) introduced the Mentoring to Succeed Act in recognition of January as National Mentoring Month. U.S. Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL), Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), and Cory Booker (D-NJ) introduced companion legislation in the Senate today. This legislation creates a strong, sustainable support system through mentorship to ensure that children who experience barriers like poverty, disability, adverse childhood experiences, or drug or alcohol abuse, can successfully transition to high school, college, and the workforce.  The Mentoring to Succeed Act would strengthen investments in mentorship programs to help youth facing risk develop the academic, social, and workforce skills that lead to success.

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Representatives Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), Jared Huffman (CA-02), and Jamie Raskin (MD-08) led 42 colleagues in a letter to President Donald Trump requesting that he immediately withdraw his recent executive order which directs the U.S. Department of Education, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Bureau of Indian Education, and the Department of Defense to prioritize funding for private and charter schools, including faith-based institutions, via ‘voucher’ programs.

The bill would invest in mentoring programs that help students overcome adversity and trauma and develop the workforce skills employers are seeking. U.S. Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth introduced the Senate companion of the legislation.

Washington, D.C. – Yesterday, a National Labor Relations Board regional director ruled that Northwestern University football players are employees of the University and have the right to form a union and bargain collectively. Rep. Jan Schakowsky issued the following statement on this matter:

"I am pleased with the NLRB ruling that correctly recognizes Northwestern football players as University employees. These young men dedicate 40-plus hours a week for much of the school year to the football program and they deserve the right to unionize.
