WASHINGTON— Today, Reps. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Raúl M. Grijalva (D-AZ), and Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) reintroduced the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Restoration Act. Over 8 million Americans, all of them over the age of 65 or with significant disabilities, rely on SSI benefits to meet their basic needs. Currently, SSI benefits provide an average income that is below the poverty line. With the program being largely unchanged since its inception in 1972, the SSI Restoration Act makes critical updates to keep beneficiaries out of poverty.

"As we start LGBTQ Pride Month this year, I join the community in recognizing the progress our nation has made and acknowledging the challenges that remain. The first Pride was a riot, where trans women of color led the fight against police brutality and intimidation that had become the standard for LGBTQ gathering places. In 2021, many in the community continue to face hate or harassment because of the gender identity or expression, or their sexual orientation.

EVANSTON – Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), a Senior Chief Deputy Whip, was joined by Reps. Buddy Carter (GA-01), Earl Blumenauer (OR-03) and Mike Kelly (PA-16) in reintroducing The Lymphedema Treatment Act. The Lymphedema Treatment Act, H.R. 3630, was reintroduced with 147 original co-sponsors, the most original cosponsors - in both the House and Senate - than any other healthcare bill thus far in the 117th Congress. The legislation ensures that Medicare Part B covers compression garments, the clinically-recognized treatment for lymphedema.

EVANSTON - Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip, announced the winners of the Illinois 9th Congressional District's 2021 "An Artistic Discovery" Congressional Art Competition, naming students who were chosen to receive the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes. This annual competition, sponsored by the Congressional Institute, invites young artists from around the nation to compose and submit visual art to their member of Congress. The winning piece from each District is then hung in the Cannon Tunnel, which lawmakers, staff, and tourists alike pass each day as they move between the House Office Buildings and the U.S. Capitol.

WASHINGTON  – Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (IL-09) joined her colleagues Barbara Lee (CA-13), Co-Chair of the Majority Leader's Taskforce on Poverty and Opportunity, and Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), Chair of the House Progressive Caucus, to unveil a Congressional resolution calling for a bold Third reconstruction, which demands that the U.S. fully address poverty and low wages from the bottom up.  This legislation was endorsed by Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II and Rev. Dr. Liz  Theoharis, co-chairs of the Poor People's Campaign.

Connolly (D-VA), Peter Welch (D-VT), Barbara Lee (D-CA), Alan Lowenthal (D-CA), Mark Pocan (D-WI), Lloyd Doggett (D-TX), Ro Khanna (D-CA), and John Yarmuth (D-KY) sent a letter with 138 cosigners to President Biden calling for him and his Administration to boldly lead and take decisive action to immediately end the violence in Israel and Gaza.
